MISSION STATEMENT
Understanding the Power Sportsman and Hardcore Medicine
Providing superior medical care, through understanding and respect.
Modern day “weight lifting” has advanced to such a degree that we are witnessing nothing less than super-human feats of strength every day. The common “strong guy/gal” in the gym today, would have been a world record holder only 20 years ago!!! This has occurred secondary to dramatic improvements in training gear, equipment, regimens and of course supplements.
These are the people who have dedicated their life’s to serious training in the disciplines of Power Lifting, Body Building and Strong Man. I call them, “Power Sportsman”. Never before have we seen such an explosion in the numbers of people engaged in these activities and to such varied degrees of participation; from the hobby level to full blown Professional. Like it or not, the Power Sportsman is taking over the world!!
The Power Sportsman lives a life of physical culture and thrives as he/she battles the forces of nature. Like any other entity in our universe, these hardcore training regimens and life styles are governed by the basic laws of physics; and specifically Newton’s third law of motion:
“for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”
Such intense biologic stress will have its consequences and for optimal performance, the Power Sportsman will need close medical supervision. Until now, such “specialized” medical care has not existed. As a Healer/Physician, we must first be humble and respect our patients. Understanding is fundamental to respect and never before, has the Power Sportsman had a physician that understands his/her unique life style and therefore respected his/her actions. Unfortunately, this group of individuals have been in diaspora, discriminated and even at times, ridiculed by the “good physicians” around us. Those days are over!!!
HARDCORE MEDICINE:
A sub-specialty of Internal Medicine that is dedicated to the care of the Power Sportsman through understanding. An integrated medical discipline unifying evidenced based medicine, accessibility and respect! All for improved healthy outcomes for the Power Sportsman, so that he/she may grow “healthy” and strong!
There is no other animal quite like the Power Sportsman. He lives under great stress! With no clear etiology. He may not have superior genes, yet despite this, he trains as if his life depends on it- and it shows!
He trains virtually year round. Maybe training for a local Power lifting meet, a national or world competition, a Strong man contest, to close a Captain’s of Crush #3 gripper or to improve on a new PR in his dirty basement gym.
It’s all the same insane intensity!
It is impossible to understand this behavior, unless one is intimately involved in the under culture himself. The result is that to the outsider, the Power Sportsman is a rarity, an anomaly, a freak. And the Power Sportsman becomes further ostracized from mainstream society. This paradoxical feed-back to the Power Sportsman, in some interesting psychosocial manner makes him feel whole! Makes him train harder!
Relentless training regimens like this require “Hard-Core” Medicine.
The Power Sportsman needs the services of the Metabolic Doc. To care for his beaten body so he may continue his quest for wholeness, as healthy and as long as possible.
I am a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician who specializes in “Hard-Core medicine”, the medical care of men involved in the Power Sports-- “ The Power Sportsman”, e.g., Power lifters, Strongmen and Bodybuilders.
These men are very unique. The lifestyle these men live is very different than that of ordinary men, therefore necessitating a very different, yet competent Physician who not only can understand these special men, but a physician who lives the hard-core under-culture himself.
Like any other good Power Sportsman, I lift; and I lift as heavy as possible.
I have been lifting since I was 14 years old.
In the past, I have competed in Body Building, but my love for the Iron Game lies in Power Lifting.
I hold the current APA Connecticut Bench Press Record at 198 & 220lb. Class Masters 1 & 2.
I am currently bench pressing over 500lbs consistently and hope to continue this through my 80's! I have dead lifted 565 and dream of 600 soon.
Directly out of Residency training, my partner and i opened the first Concierge Medical practice in central Connecticut- Personal Care Physicians, LLC.
